Before you go:
We often think about preparing our medication at the last minute, but it's often in a hurry that we forget things!
Ideally, prepare your first aid kit 3 to 2 days before your departure. This will allow you time to go to the pharmacy if necessary.
What to put in your travel kit?
Here are the essentials not to forget before closing your suitcase:
- Your usual medication
- Your up-to-date prescriptions
- A well-organized travel pillbox
- The European Health Insurance Card (for Europe)
- The contact of your treating doctor, in case of extreme need!
The travel pillbox: your best ally!
A good pillbox allows you to prepare your doses in advance, avoid forgetting them despite time zone changes, and avoid carrying bulky boxes. Choose one with clearly identified compartments (morning, noon, evening) to simplify your daily life.
By plane: pay attention to baggage rules
If you are traveling by plane, your liquid medications (drops, syrups...) are subject to the 100 ml rule in carry-on baggage. Solid medications (tablets, capsules) are allowed without quantity restriction, provided you have the corresponding prescription.
Also remember to distribute your medication between your carry-on baggage and your checked suitcase to be prepared for any eventuality. You never know if a bag will get lost!
Heat-sensitive medications
Attention! Certain medications (insulin, certain antibiotics) must be kept cool. Special insulated travel pouches exist for this. Remember to notify the hotel in advance to have access to a refrigerator.
Managing time zone changes
Are you traveling to a country with a significant time difference? For medications taken at regular intervals (such as certain antibiotics or birth control pills), ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before you leave. They will tell you how to gradually adjust your dosing schedule.
